Qube! Brings Performance to Arch-Viz

John McAslan + Partners taps PipelineFX’s Qube! to add speed and efficiency to creating captivating visuals.

Los Angeles, CA — As computer graphics have grown in prominence, rendering has become a double-edged sword for architectural designers. For firms like John McAslan + Partners conquering the time-intensive side of the process has lead them to solutions like PipelineFX’s Qube!, a professional render farm manager that has brought efficiency and speed back to their real desire: captivating visuals that will win them business.

Now in its 25th year, London’s John McAslan + Partners is a highly awarded (over 90 international design awards and counting), highly creative architecture firm specializing in the type of projects most companies only dream about. With recent designs for the redeveloped King’s Cross Station, and no less than 16 projects on site in Qatar, McAslan is sitting on a system that gets projects built. Behind this pipeline, Qube! directs their images and fly-through animations through an automated system of prioritization filters and job routing.

“We use it every day for global illumination and beauty passes,” said Luigi Mussardo, Senior 3D Animator/Technical Artist at John McAslan + Partners. “Because we need our workstations during business hours, we put Qube! to work after we leave and keep it on all night and weekend long. That power is a big reason why we don’t have to render everything in the cloud or pay others to do our animation jobs.”

McAslan + Partners saw Qube! as a chance to make sure work was always getting done, even when no one was watching. “The process of waiting for an image to render steals time that we could be using to make improvements to our work,” added Mussardo. “So if you have a system that can’t start a job again that has failed, or redirect it to a computer that’s not being used, even more time is lost. We saw Qube! as a way to get some back.”

The default render manager for 3ds Max made render farm management too expensive in both man hours and downtime. However, the process of trying to resolve some of its issues ended up a positive, as it led to a list of must-haves for what would become their solution – the top tier being stability, then artist-friendly and customizable.

1022876-qube-03

“I’m a technically minded 3D artist, but certainly not trained in programming,” continued Mussardo. “With Qube!, I was able to set the system up and then use support whenever I was unsure about my next step. They respond so quickly, it rarely feels like there is a time zone difference.”

After installation, crashes became a thing of the past at McAslan + Partners, and with Qube!’s centralized approach the team has eliminated the need to re-send huge scene files to each worker every time there was a change. In the morning, when nodes are needed as workstations, Qube!’s ability to lock out certain computers from the render farm helps artists easily decide how they want their farm to behave.

As part of their deal with PipelineFX, McAslan + Partners was also one of the first companies to utilize the new “Qube! Designer” licensing option, which drops worker prices for design firms running one render job per host to $100 a year. Created to give design teams a leg up, Qube! Designer is a fully functional version of Qube! intended for designers who primarily use Autodesk 3ds Max and/or Adobe After Effects. The former, along with Chaos Group’s V-Ray, are big mainstays at McAslan + Partners, while the latter is being worked into their Qube! job types now.

“Qube! has been solid and reliable from our very first test,” said Mussardo. “And the fact that a 3D artist can manage it by himself makes it even better. It’s perfect for designers.”

Blackmagic Design acquires eyeon Software, Inc.

Blackmagic Design acquires eyeon Software, Inc.

Well this comes as a shock…Blackmagic Design announced today at IBC that they have acquired eyeon software to compliment DaVinci Resolvee 11 and their apparently growing software business.  What do you think? Is this going to be good for Fusion or bad?

Read the press release below.

IBC 2014, Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 12, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced its acquisition of eyeon Software, Inc., a leading developer of high end digital compositing, visual effects and motion graphics software for the feature film, commercial, television and broadcast industries. eyeon, headquartered in Toronto, Canada, is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Blackmagic Design.

eyeon’s Fusion 7 will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2014 booth in Hall 7, Stand H20.

Fusion 7 is one of Hollywood’s leading visual effects compositing and motion graphics tools and has been used on thousands of feature film and television projects. Most recently, Fusion 7 has been used on feature films like Maleficent, Edge of Tomorrow, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, The Amazing Spiderman 2, Captain America, Gravity and more.

Fusion 7 combines the best in motion graphics and high end visual effects compositing into a single application. In addition to its advanced compositing tools, Fusion 7 also includes comprehensive paint, rotoscope, keying, layering and titling tools, along with an amazing particle generator system. It can import geometry from other applications as well as create its own elements, like text and particles, from scratch. Elements can be composited together and quickly output using Fusion’s GPU accelerated render engine. Multiple renders can be combined in one project to render different aspects of the same scene. Fusion 7 goes beyond just compositing layers and has a full set of creation tools for building objects and scene elements in a 3D system that can handle millions of polygons with complex shading.

“We’re really excited about the acquisition of eyeon,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “Fusion compositing, 3D and motion graphics software has been used on some of Hollywood’s biggest visual effects blockbusters. When used together with DaVinci Resolve for editing and grading, Fusion also gives customers the world’s most advanced tools for 3D compositing, visual effects, motion graphics design and more!”

“Blackmagic Design is the most progressive company in professional post production today,” said Steve Roberts, CEO and founder of eyeon. “With their focus on developing the best solutions and a global network of offices, Blackmagic gives customers the products and services they deserve. The acquisition of eyeon will provide greater development and support of Fusion and Generation, where customers will now have more dynamic, comprehensive, and faster solutions for their creative needs.”

“Fusion 7’s great 3D improvements have added to our toolkit, giving us options that greatly expand our ability to quickly put together shots and make final adjustments without the need to go back into a 3D app for changes,” said David Stinnett, VFX Supervisor, Blur Studios, Thor: The Dark World and Amazing Spiderman 2. “Fusion 7 expands our ability to stay flexible for whatever the job demands.”

Zbrush 4R7 Has Been Announced

ZBrush 4R7

Pixologic is proud to announce ZBrush 4R7, which will be the final release in the ZBrush 4 series. More information about this version will be made available at a later date.

They are currently deep in development of the 64-bit version of ZBrush and 4R7 will be the final 32-bit version.

They will be releasing a 64-bit public beta of ZBrush 4R7 on the same day that the 32-bit version is officially released for both Windows and Macintosh.

They are happy to announce a collaboration with Luxion, creating a Bridge for seamless interaction between ZBrush and KeyShot.

A ZBrush Bridge and KeyShot package will be offered at an MSRP of $349. However, we will offer an introductory pricing of $249. This offer will be available upon the release of ZBrush 4R7.

Get ZBrush 4R7 Free when you purchase any new license of ZBrush 4R6!

Take a peek at what they’ve been up to with these images created by Joseph Drust, Paul Gaboury and Thomas Roussel using the new ZBrush features as well as the ZBrush to KeyShot Bridge:

ZBrush 4R7 FAQ

Q: When will ZBrush 4R7 be released?
A: Release date, upgrade instructions and feature list will be posted at a later date.

All registered users – including those who will purchase ZBrush between now and the release of ZBrush 4R7 – will receive the 4R7 update free of charge!

Q: What is a ”Public Beta”?
A: It’s a special edition of ZBrush 4R7 64-BIT. The features are exactly the same as the 32-BIT 4R7 version but we have updated the core of ZBrush to take full advantage of 64-BIT processing power and memory (RAM) capabilities.

Q: Is the KeyShot for ZBrush Bridge the KeyShot renderer?
A: No. The bridge only sends data from ZBrush to KeyShot. You still need to actually have KeyShot 5 or above installed on your computer in order for it to be able to render.

Q: What is “KeyShot for ZBrush”?
A: KeyShot for ZBrush will be the latest KeyShot version, designed to work exclusively with the “ZBrush to KeyShot” bridge. Both will be available concurrently with the release of ZBrush 4R7 and available at an introduction price of USD 249.

Q: If I already have KeyShot, can I get the ZBrush to KeyShot Bridge by itself?
A: Yes. The price for the Bridge by itself will be announced at a later date.

Q: Is “KeyShot for ZBrush” a full version of KeyShot?
A: YES! This special edition has all of KeyShot’s features but is designed to work exclusively with the “ZBrush to KeyShot Bridge”. (“KeyShot for ZBrush” is equivalent to KeyShot HD without the importers).

Q: Will ZBrush 5 have a 32-BIT version?
A: No. ZBrush 4R7 will be the last 32-BIT version.

Q: Which features will ZBrush 5 contain?
A: We are not announcing the features for ZBrush 5 yet, except that it will be 64-bits for Windows and Macintosh systems.
