Smooth Operator is the first full release from Beardo Games. It made a splash at both the GDC 2015 and SXSW 2015. It was not necessarily well received, but indeed, it was received. It was the most memorable game launched at the GDC’s Big Indie Pitch this year, and possibly the most interesting game at SXSW as well. Mechanically, it’s a cooperative two-player game (in which the chosen two characters make out). Smooth Operator includes over 16 unique, selectable characters. It combines the absolute powers of hilarity and discomfort. Pay attention to Beardo Games! More is to come. Continue reading “Smooth Operator, the GDC’s Make Out Darling”…

Amidst all the meetings and events and talks and panels at this year’s Game Developers Conference, there was also Pocket Gamer’s Big Indie Pitch. The Big Indie Pitch is a way for indie developers to get their games in front of several eyes (media, PR, publishers, etc) in a short span of time, and it’s a great way for those of us who write about the industry to get a quick glimpse into the future.
That, and sometimes there are some really cool and interesting games on display.
Which is why we’ve put together a short list of the most notable entries in this year’s Big Indie Pitch. In no particular order, of course.

Made with Marmalade
Motion Media is now the only reseller in the United States for native app development software Marmalade. The Marmalade SDK enables developers to deploy code across multiple platforms and devices from a single code base in C++, Lua, HTML or Objective-C. Learn More
Here’s snippets from a recent article from Developer, highlighting apps made with Marmalade benefits:
In today’s market, developing games natively for each of your target platforms can be a chore – particularly in the increasingly fragmented mobile sector…
“Doubling of code also means doubling of bugs and support needed. So you would need to double your development staff and double the code, which brings double the bugs and pushes up risk and complexity.”
The answer for many is to use cross-platform development tools, such as Marmalade. Creating a game that can be easily deployed to multiple devices and app stores, without compromising on performance, takes much of the pain out of multi-format native development – perfect for studios such asTalisman: Digital Edition developer Nomad Games, for which MD and co-founder Don Whiteford says cross-platform releases are “a fundamental business strategy”.
Manojlovic says there are many advantages to cross-platform development: “You only have to develop one game code, and it will work on all the different platforms, such as iOS, Android, Windows, and more. Also, for the most part, you don’t have to deal with the system specifics of each platform.
“It can save you a tremendous amount of time and resources. Instead of having a team of platform-specific specialists to keep your code up-to-date, you can focus your resources on where it counts – delivering a superb user-experience. I don’t think we would be able to put out such a polished and fun game in the timeframe we had without Marmalade.”
