Get Substance Designer 5.2 Now

Substance Designer 5.2

This Substance Designer 5.2 update targets mostly the 3D view, graph, export and performance; most importantly:

  • 3D view features : tesselation and opacity support in PBR shaders.
  • Convert maps to Vray/Corona/Redshift/Arnold targets using the PBR converter filter.
  • Pixel Processor node performance boost on DX10 engine: about 50 times faster :)
  • Graph improvements: options to render comments at constant size, and to disable new node display in the 2D view.
  • Option to hide/display PSD layers in the library preferences.

RealFlow Case Study: Age of Ultron

From literally the first frame of the movie you can see RealFlow Hybrido being used in addition to Maya N-Particles for the scenes involving Loki’s scepter, and then later in the movie during the creation of Vision. For the early scenes where Tony Stark is acquiring the scepter I used RealFlow D-Splines and noise Daemons to control the flow of the ethereal blue particles as they were being siphoned off into the batteries on the table. For the creation of Vision, as Dr. Helen Cho is monitoring a screen showing the Vibranium fusing itself to his cellular structure I used the RealFlow Magic Daemon to attract viscous Hybrido particles.

V-Ray 3.2 for 3ds Max 2016 is Here

V-Ray 3.2 for 3ds Max 2016

We’re excited to let you know the latest update to V-Ray 3.2 for 3ds Max 2016 is VR-Ready and fully compatible with 3ds Max 2016. This free update for V-Ray 3.0 customers includes support for major VR formats, including Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR.

Here’s what’s new:

VR Cameras – The two new VR camera types will render stereo cube maps and spherical stereo images. This allows artists and designers to output V-Ray scenes to popular VR formats like Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR.

V-Ray RT GPU Improvements – Among the new features and speed improvements is QMC sampling. Licensed from NVIDIA, QMC sampling provides overall speed improvements and resolves noise quicker when using CUDA.

Additionally, V-Ray RT GPU now supports:
• Displacement
• Anisotropic highlights
• Composite map
• Output curves
• Texture baking
• UDIM support (MARI)

Volume rendering
• New V-Ray Volume Grid adds support for OpenVDB, Field3D, and Phoenix FD volume grid formats. This allows users to import and render data from popular effects applications like Houdini and FumeFX.

Distributed rendering
• Add or remove distributed rendering nodes on the fly

Global Illumination
• Refined Light Cache algorithm removes light leaks and improves animation

Geometry
• New preview types for proxy objects – includes mesh simplification for optimized proxy display
• Faster rendering of hair and fur
• Intel Embree support for 3ds Max Hair & Fur and V-Ray Fur

3ds Max 2016
• Full support for new Physical Camera – co-developed with 3ds Max team
• Support for new Physical Camera Exposure Control
• V-Ray Lens Analysis Utility adds support for the 3ds Max Physical Camera

You may have noticed earlier this week some new builds became available for V-Ray for 3ds Max in your download center, if you already downloaded V-Ray 3.20.01, the new build is 3.20.02.

Aja announced their entry into the camera market yesterday with the brand spankin new CION. The retro looking camera is quite beautiful with wood and suede accents against a black metal body. The camera does 4K, UHD, 2K and HD with its APS-C Sensor as well as RAW via the (awesome) built in thunderbolt port. The camera has all the bells and whistles you would expect from an Alexa, but for only $8,995.
